We've been working with Kurt Sorge since 2019. Watching him throw-down at Rampage year after year, shred big mountain lines and generally be an all around adventure seeker make him a fan fave. We were just shooting around ideas with Kurt and we landed on the thought of creating a special graphic for his 2024 Rampage jersey. From there we laid out a design that Kurt took even further! Read on to hear Kurt's story...
Kurt Sorge: I couldn’t have been more stoked on how my signature jersey came out. I was excited to work on a completely brand-new logo for the design, and I had an idea I’d been wanting to bring to life for a long time—a mountain bike rider getting barrelled by a wave of dirt!
There’s an artist out of Maui, Hawaii, whose work I’ve been a big fan of ever since I first saw it: Laihha Organna Moss-Novak, @loindaflow. Her style is surfy and tropical, often featuring skeletons, and I thought it would be perfect for what I had in mind.
What many might not know is that ever since my first surf trip down to Baja, Mexico, about 15 years ago, I’ve been completely obsessed with surfing, the ocean, and the lifestyle around it. What many do know is my love for big mountain freeriding on a bike. I like riding mountain bike lines the same way I would on my snowboard or attacking turns and drawing lines like you would surfing a wave. Hence the name “Dirt Surfin”.
It was really fun working on this design with Laihha. After dialling in how a rider might look while surfing a wave, I mentioned that the logo would be a collaboration with Chromag—and that their logo is a bear, which also happens to be my spirit animal. We played around with a few ideas before Laihha came up with the bear tearing through the back of the wave, and I instantly fell in love with the design.
Working with Claire and Tree at Chromag on the jersey layout came out perfect, and I was fired up to rock it in my Rampage finals run in 2024 and pull my favourite run to date!
